Chelsea marked a chaotic afternoon at Reading's Madejski Stadium 20 years ago today, with captain John Terry forced to take the goalkeeper gloves in a nine-man 1-0 victory.

The match descended into crisis inside the opening minute when Petr Cech suffered a serious head injury that required surgery on his skull. The Czech goalkeeper was able to make a full recovery and returned between the posts just months later.

Frank Lampard gave Chelsea the lead with a deflected free-kick on the stroke of half-time. The second half brought further chaos as both sides were reduced to ten men, before substitute goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was knocked unconscious after a collision with Ibrahima Sonko while collecting a corner.

With minutes remaining, Terry took the shirt of third-choice goalkeeper Hilario and stood between the posts as Chelsea closed out the result with nine men. The defender was rarely tested but the Blues held on for the win.

The 1-0 victory at the Madejski — Chelsea's first league visit to the newly-promoted Royals — remains one of the more remarkable results in the club's recent history.
