Tottenham Hotspur began the 2026/27 Premier League season with a 3-0 defeat away at Brentford on Saturday, a result that underlined the scale of the club's ongoing rebuilding work.

Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt put Brentford two goals ahead before the 35th minute at the Gtech Community Stadium. Michael Kayode added a third just four minutes into the second half to seal the result.

Tottenham's misery could have been greater. Igor Thiago struck a penalty off the post in the 55th minute after Rodrigo Bentancur was adjudged to have fouled Kevin Schade in the area.

Mikey Moore offered Tottenham their clearest route back into the match, creating three chances in the second period, but was denied each time by Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The defeat handed Brentford their first-ever home Premier League victory against Tottenham. The result came as Spurs continue to adapt to significant changes in personnel and management heading into the new campaign.
