Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has won goodwill from supporters with his refreshing honesty and attacking intent, but results have been inconsistent, with just one win from the club's first four Premier League games this season.

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty, who was born in Liverpool and has covered Merseyside football throughout his career, offered a detailed assessment of the club ahead of their Carabao Cup third-round tie at Anfield on Monday evening.

"I think Liverpool supporters are happier with the intent but not so satisfied with the execution so far," McNulty said. "It is clear Andoni Iraola wants Liverpool to be more proactive in the attacking areas after the stodge served up under sacked Arne Slot last season, and that alone ticks boxes for supporters who expect more than they saw in a dismal Premier League title defence — they ended up fifth."

McNulty noted that Iraola's move from Bournemouth represents a significant step up in scrutiny. "What he will have quickly learned is that managing Liverpool takes him into a different stratosphere than managing Bournemouth. Every word, every decision, is dissected."

On the attacking options available, McNulty highlighted the mixed picture. Alexander Isak has shown improvement, notably scoring twice in a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town, while Cody Gakpo — who almost left for Manchester City — has started the season well. Bradley Barcola, signed for £123m late in the transfer window, and Victor Munoz, from Osasuna and a member of Spain's World Cup-winning squad, are both still settling in.

Florian Wirtz remains a concern. "There is no doubting his ability, but too often he is lightweight and brushed off the ball too easily," McNulty said. "It is frustrating for him and the Liverpool supporters willing him to do well."

Liverpool also received a significant blow with Hugo Ekitike ruled out until 2027 after sustaining a serious Achilles tendon injury, removing one of the few standout performers from the previous campaign.

In midfield, the absence of a natural number six continues to leave Liverpool vulnerable. The weakness was exposed in a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United, where the hosts ran through them to score twice.

The most impressive newcomer according to McNulty has been central defender Jeremy Jacquet, a 21-year-old signed from Rennes the previous season. "He has pace, power and no little skill. He has settled comfortably alongside Virgil van Dijk," McNulty said.

Liverpool host their Carabao Cup third-round tie at Anfield on Monday, kick-off at 8pm UK time.
