Erling Haaland has become the all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League era of the Manchester derby, surpassing Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney with nine goals from eight games.
The Norwegian's 60th-minute strike at Old Trafford on Sunday secured a 1-0 win for Enzo Maresca's 10-man Manchester City in the 199th league meeting between the two clubs.
"I knew about this record before, I read about it, so it had ended up in my head," Haaland said. "I'm super proud of that. This is something that makes me really, really happy because we all know how special this game is."
Haaland's finish, confirmed after a three-minute VAR check, lifted him clear of Aguero and Rooney, who each scored eight Premier League derby goals across their careers.
The 26-year-old described the goal as purely instinctive. "It's just pure instinct, of what I feel is the right thing to do," he said. "It's just about trying to get the ball in the back of the net and shooting good enough so the keeper cannot save it."
The victory gave City four wins from four league games under Maresca. Haaland, who has been at the Etihad for four seasons, said personal development remains his focus. "I'm still 26, I can still develop parts of my game," he added. "I have to be the decisive player so it's about delivering what I can do for Manchester City."
