Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has spoken about life under new manager Xabi Alonso during the club's pre-season tour in Sydney, describing the Spaniard as a coach who commands immediate respect.
"He was an unbelievable player; one of the best of his generation. So, of course, you listen when he talks because he has experience of playing for big clubs and winning everything," Fofana said. "He knows how to explain things well and manage players. He and his staff are top. We are enjoying working with them."
Fofana also highlighted the value of the tour for supporters who had travelled long distances. "It's a long way to come from London. We have travelled far! But we know that many fans have also come from across Australia or beyond to see us. So, if we can sign a shirt or take a picture with them, maybe we make a dream come true, you know?"
Chelsea faced Western Sydney Wanderers in a pre-season fixture during the tour. Fofana described it as a useful workout. "They played with a lot of intensity and showed their quality. At half-time, the manager gave us some little details, and you understand he knows football so well."
The defender said the squad used the summer break to recover after two demanding seasons. Several players who featured at the World Cup were given additional time off. Fofana himself remained largely in London during the off-season, attending the Monaco Grand Prix, but continued individual training ahead of the new campaign.
