Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea as the latest addition to Xabi Alonso's squad, arriving from west London neighbours Brentford. The 91-cap England international brings Champions League and Premier League winners' medals to Stamford Bridge.
Henderson made his senior debut in professional football at Stamford Bridge itself in 2008, coming off the bench at half-time to replace Steed Malbranque for Sunderland in a 5-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea, a match inspired by a Nicolas Anelka hat-trick.
He began his Sunderland career as a right winger, winning the club's Young Player of the Year award in 2009/10 before moving into central midfield — where he won the same award the following season — after the absence of Lee Cattermole.
Henderson holds a unique England record, becoming the first person named as the national team's Player of the Year at both senior and Under-21 level. He was the inaugural winner of the Under-21 award after helping England to a 100 per cent record in 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying, then claimed the senior prize seven years later.
His appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer made him the only Englishman to have played at four World Cups and seven major tournaments in total. The one gap in that record is Euro 2024, which he missed.
Sunderland — his boyhood club — featured at several landmark moments even after he left: they were the opponents for his Liverpool debut, his 50th appearance for the club, and his 100th, the last of those coming at the Stadium of Light.
Henderson became the first Liverpool captain to lead the club in a UEFA Champions League final for over a decade when he took the Reds to Kyiv in 2018, though they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid. The following year, Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in an all-English final in Madrid to claim the trophy.
Combining that Champions League win with a penalty victory over Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul and an extra-time win over Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup final, Henderson became the first captain to lift all three continental trophies in the same calendar year with an English club. Cesar Azpilicueta has since matched the achievement with Chelsea.
When Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties at Wembley in the 2022 FA Cup final, Henderson lifted his sixth trophy as Reds captain — making him officially the most successful skipper in Liverpool's history.
After ending his 12-year Liverpool career in 2023, Henderson had a brief spell at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, where his manager was Steven Gerrard, his former team-mate and predecessor as Liverpool captain. He then spent one-and-a-half seasons at Ajax in the Netherlands, becoming only the second English player since 1979 to represent the Amsterdam club, following Chuba Akpom.
