Chelsea players celebrate during Women's Super League match against Manchester United

Chelsea bounced back from a frustrating opening-day draw by beating Manchester United 5-0 away from home in the Women's Super League, turning a clinical display into a commanding three points.

The victory followed a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in which Chelsea had generated an xG of 3.6 from 35 shots but scored only once. Against United, the Blues converted five goals from a lower xG of 2.94 and just 25 shots.

Head coach Sonia Bompastor had flagged the need for early goals after the Villa match. "The reality of football is that in this kind of game, we need to be two or three-nil up by half-time, and the game is over," she said. "Then, it's a completely different game coming into the second half because when you have two or three goals difference, you can bring players in, rotate the squad."

Sjoeke Nusken and Keira Walsh gave Chelsea a 2-0 lead by half-time, with Lauren James adding a third on the hour. Bompastor made a triple substitution in the 71st minute before Ellie Carpenter and Lucy Bronze completed the rout.

Walsh, appearing in her 50th Chelsea match, scored from outside the box and assisted James after 61 minutes, earning Player of the Match. Midfielder Wieke Kaptein created four chances and won possession back ten times without getting on the scoresheet.

Twenty-year-old academy product Lexi Potter completed 91.7 per cent of her 48 passing attempts, allowing Walsh the freedom to advance. "Lexi deserves to get minutes in this team," said Bompastor. "She's a really good player… it was a good opportunity for her, and she had a good performance."

Manchester United, playing only their second game under new head coach Eva Olid following the summer departure of Marc Skinner, were restricted to an xG of 0.20, managing just two shots on goal and four touches inside Chelsea's box.
