Arsenal have signed full-back Habeeb Ogunneye, a young defender who arrives with experience from Manchester United's academy and Newport County.
"It feels great to be here, it's such a big club," Ogunneye said after completing the move. The Hackney-born defender described the transfer as a personal homecoming, with family ties to north London pulling him back to the area.
"I've got family who live in Hackney, so it's literally a full-circle moment. It's fantastic [to have my family here]," he added.
Ogunneye also cited Arsenal's academy-to-first-team pathway as a decisive factor. The club's young players featured prominently in their Premier League title triumph last season, which made the destination an easy choice. "When I heard [Arsenal] were interested in me, I said to my agents it's a no-brainer," he said.
Beyond his academy background at Manchester United, Ogunneye gained senior experience during the first half of last season on loan at Newport County. He scored for the Welsh club and contributed to their successful relegation battle.
"It was great, my first season in men's football, [learning about] the physicality, the recovery side, it was a great experience," he said of the Newport stint. He also recalled his first senior goal: "I remember when I scored, it was like a moment of madness. The stadium erupted; that's the first time it's properly happened for me, being in a big stadium where the three points mean something."
Ogunneye has also represented England at under-17 level. He joins Arsenal aiming to develop further and push for first-team involvement.
