James Tarkowski has written his first captain's notes for Everton ahead of the club's 2026/27 Premier League opener against Crystal Palace at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday.
"These are my first notes as captain and I have to start by expressing what an honour it is to lead this team," Tarkowski wrote. "To play for a massive club like Everton is special enough but to follow in the footsteps of some legendary names as captain means a huge amount to my family and me."
Tarkowski acknowledged the standard set by his predecessor Seamus Coleman. "So many people in football rightly acknowledge what an inspirational leader he is and, while I'm fully aware of the big task it is to follow on from him, I know it's important to continue the high standards Seamus set day in and day out."
The defender said the club had made progress in its first full season at the new stadium under new ownership, but noted the disappointment of missing out on Europe at the end of 2025/26. New arrivals Hayden, Christian and Brennan have joined returning players Merlin and Tyrique in the squad ahead of the new campaign.
Tarkowski flagged Crystal Palace as a stern opening test, noting their FA Cup and UEFA Conference League wins in recent seasons. He also acknowledged former teammate Dwight McNeil, who moved to Selhurst Park in the summer after spells alongside Tarkowski at both Burnley and Everton.
