Arsenal welcome Lille to Emirates Stadium on Tuesday for their second Champions League group-stage fixture, a first-ever meeting between the two clubs. The Gunners beat Napoli 1-0 last month to open their continental campaign and arrive into this match unbeaten in their last 16 Champions League games.
Manager Mikel Arteta urged caution ahead of the tie. "We have to earn the right to get in that position again. They are very, very well coached. What Davide has done is remarkable — you can see the way they are competing and the problems they have caused to big teams," he said.
Lille head coach Davide Ancelotti acknowledged the difficulty of the occasion. "We're facing a very difficult team in a challenging environment. That excellent tie against Real Madrid gave them a lot of confidence. It's a project that should be an example of stability and consistency," he said.
Lille arrive at Emirates Stadium having lost their Champions League opener 3-2 to Real Betis, despite leading twice. They sit second in Ligue 1, with 40-year-old Olivier Giroud — who scored 105 goals for Arsenal across six seasons — set to face his former club.
For Arsenal, Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi have been ruled out after picking up ankle injuries in training following the win over Leeds United. Christos Tzolis remains sidelined with a hamstring problem, and William Saliba is still some weeks away from returning after a back injury.
Lille will be without Ethan Mbappe, who is suspended after his red card against Betis. Attacking left-back Thiago Santos was stretchered off with a knee injury at the weekend, while Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane remains sidelined with a cruciate injury.
Kai Havertz carries a strong run of form into the match, having scored seven goals in his last 11 Champions League appearances. He needs one more to become the 10th different player to score 10 or more Champions League goals for Arsenal.
German referee Felix Zwayer takes charge of the game. His previous Arsenal assignment was the 2-1 defeat at PSG in last season's semi-final — the last time the Gunners lost a Champions League match in normal time.
