Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli made his first senior appearance for Chelsea during the club's 2026 pre-season tour — in the Australian city where he was born.

The teenage midfielder was born in Sydney before moving to London as a toddler, where he joined the Chelsea Academy and progressed through the youth ranks. He signed his scholarship to go full-time earlier this summer before earning a place in Xabi Alonso's tour squad.

Nicoll-Jazuli came off the bench in Chelsea's opening friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers and again in the game against Tottenham Hotspur, both played in Sydney. He was then named in the starting XI for the match against Juventus in Hong Kong.

'It's been top, and I feel like, coming back to my home country, it's just a proud moment,' Nicoll-Jazuli said on tour. 'It's ironic that I'm making my debut, my unofficial debut, at Chelsea in Sydney. I was there when I was young so I wasn't really there for long, growing up in London. And from leaving when I was about two or three, I feel like coming back there was just meant to be. So I'm really proud to have made it there.'

The 19-year-old also acknowledged the role his family played in the milestone. 'It's important obviously to have my family there, they've done everything for me. I'm so grateful for them. So being able to see me make my debut, obviously they're very proud and I'm very grateful.'

Nicoll-Jazuli replaced Dario Essugo at half-time in both Sydney fixtures. His involvement in the tour reflects Chelsea's integration of academy talent under Alonso ahead of the new season.
