Enzo Maresca began his first press conference as Manchester City manager by paying tribute to Kevin Keegan, who died earlier this week. Keegan, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner and former England international, managed City between 2001 and 2005.
"Before we start, I would like to send a message and a big hug to Kevin Keegan's family for this moment," Maresca said.
Maresca was appointed City manager in June on a three-year contract, succeeding Pep Guardiola after the Spaniard's 10-year tenure in which the club won 20 trophies. The Italian returns to the Etihad for a third spell, having previously worked in the Academy and as Guardiola's assistant during the Treble season.
"I feel back home and very good. The feeling since day one has been brilliant so I'm happy," he said when asked about his return.
Maresca acknowledged the difficulty of following one of football's most successful managers, but framed the task as an honour. "First of all it's a privilege because the reason why the club decide to go for me, that for me is a privilege," he said. "I said many times, I consider Pep the best coach in the world in the last 20 to 25 years. It's a challenge, it's nice and it's a privilege."
He also pointed to historical precedent for the challenges facing managers who inherit long-standing dynasties. "The history of a manager with many years in the same Club, after always they struggle a little bit. After Sir Alex Ferguson, after [Arsene] Wenger. It's a challenge to do the right things, for the club, the fans, for everyone."
Maresca expressed confidence in the club's structure as a foundation for success. "This Club, they have had three managers in 17 years. This is not normal and doesn't happen often," he said, referencing the tenures of Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini, and Guardiola.
