Liverpool opened their 2026-27 Champions League campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring the decisive second goal early in the second half.
Marcos Llorente gave the visitors the lead in the 17th minute, but Dominik Szoboszlai levelled before half-time with the help of a Ronald Araujo assist. Mac Allister then settled the tie shortly after the interval.
"It was a good comeback. I think the first half was really good; we conceded a goal because we were not ready, we didn't defend well. But other than that, I think it was a very good first half," Mac Allister told TNT Sports after the match.
The Argentine midfielder highlighted the importance of the goals' timing around half-time. "Before the game, we spoke about the beginning of the first half and the beginning of the second half as well. I liked the mentality. We showed desire, we got the fans behind us and that's really important when you play at Anfield."
On his strike, Mac Allister was candid: "It was a good hit. Normally when I'm in those positions I like to shoot. It doesn't happen very often but I'm happy because I love to score goals."
Looking ahead to the broader European campaign, he acknowledged the weight of expectation at the club. "I know the expectations are high when you play for Liverpool and we want to meet them. We will try, we will work hard and hopefully we can get some trophies."
