Liverpool travel to St. James' Park on Sunday for their Premier League opener against Newcastle United, a fixture that has produced some of the most dramatic moments in recent English top-flight football.

The Reds have won four of their last five visits to Tyneside, with one draw, across a period stretching from April 2022 to August 2025.

On April 30, 2022, Liverpool won 1-0 thanks to a 19th-minute strike from Naby Keita. The goal began with a James Milner tackle, before Keita combined with Diogo Jota, sidestepped through the Newcastle defence and finished. Liverpool were chasing a quadruple at the time, still alive in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League title race.

February 18, 2023 brought a more comfortable 2-0 victory. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring inside 10 minutes, controlling a Trent Alexander-Arnold flick before rasping in a finish. Cody Gakpo, a recent arrival at the time, prodded in from close range moments later after a Mohamed Salah pass. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was then sent off for handling outside his area, ending the contest as a contest.

The August 27, 2023 visit produced perhaps the most remarkable result of the five. Trailing 1-0 to Anthony Gordon's opener and reduced to 10 men after Virgil van Dijk's red card, Liverpool introduced Nunez from the bench in the 77th minute. He equalised on 81 minutes and then struck a winner in the 90th minute and third minute of stoppage time. "I think in my 1,000 games as a coach or a manager I never had a game like this," said Jürgen Klopp. "Because these moments are rare and super-special."

December 4, 2024 ended 3-3 in a six-goal thriller. Alexander Isak gave Newcastle an early lead, Curtis Jones equalised after the break, Gordon restored the home side's advantage, and Salah then scored twice — both in combination with substitute Alexander-Arnold — to put Liverpool 3-2 up by the 83rd minute. Fabian Schar's header from a free-kick earned Newcastle a point at the death.

Most recently, on August 25, 2025, Liverpool won 3-2 in extraordinary circumstances. Ryan Gravenberch's long-range effort and a Hugo Ekitike goal put the reigning champions 2-0 ahead early in the second half, with Newcastle also reduced to 10 men after Gordon's first-half dismissal. Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back and substitute William Osula levelled in the 88th minute. Then, in the 90th and 10th minute of stoppage time, 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha — aged 16 years and 361 days — planted a finish at the back post to win the game and become Liverpool's youngest ever scorer.
