Andoni Iraola has described his first Premier League game as Liverpool head coach as "massive," with the Reds travelling to Newcastle United on Sunday to open the 2026-27 season at St. James' Park.

"I feel excited. I can feel it even in the atmosphere when you train with the players. You feel like this week is a little bit different," Iraola said at his pre-match press conference at the AXA Training Centre on Friday. "I'm looking forward to being there on Sunday and feel the pressure and start a competition that is what we like."

On the transfer window, Iraola acknowledged uncertainty but insisted his focus remains on the opening fixture. "I hate these two weeks or these 10 days that we have because there is a lot of uncertainty — but not in Liverpool, everywhere because once the market is open," he said. "I am focused on the game against Newcastle. That is massive for me."

Iraola confirmed Curtis Jones is set to leave the club, though no official announcement had been made. "With Curtis, you know. I think it's still not official but there is an ongoing situation," he said, adding that Jones "loved this club" and that he had spoken with the midfielder early in pre-season.

On squad needs, the manager pointed to the wide positions as the most pressing area. "There are certain situations that for me are clear — especially now on the wing because we don't have enough players specific to play in those positions," he said.

Cody Gakpo was highlighted as one of Liverpool's standout performers in pre-season. Iraola also confirmed Gakpo could be used as a centre-forward this season, though the club has prioritised developing his role on the left wing during pre-season.

Alexander Isak, returning to his former club, is expected to be central to Liverpool's attack. "Alex is going to be a very important player for us this season," Iraola said. "If we can keep him there, he will score the goals, he will give us a lot of things."

Iraola noted the challenge posed by new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle but expects the hosts to remain physically demanding. "Newcastle will be strong in transitions, very fast players up front, physical team. Especially at home, the atmosphere in St. James' Park is going to be strong," he said.

Young midfielder Trey Nyoni was also praised by Iraola, who said the player has performed at the required level even when training against senior professionals. "He will be very valuable this season for us," Iraola added.
