England's 2026 World Cup campaign ended at the semi-final stage in Atlanta on Tuesday, beaten 2-1 by Argentina. The Three Lions had been chasing a first World Cup final appearance since 1966.

The match was goalless at half-time, with neither side registering a shot on target in a tight opening 45 minutes. England broke the deadlock when Morgan Rogers picked out Anthony Gordon, who tapped home from close range.

Declan Rice was replaced by Nico O'Reilly in the 82nd minute, shortly before Argentina mounted a comeback. Alexis MacAllister struck the post before Enzo Fernández's long-range shot beat Jordan Pickford to level the scores.

Lionel Messi then provided his second assist of the game in added time, crossing for Lautaro Martínez to head home unmarked at the back post and complete the turnaround.

England will now play France in the third-place playoff in Miami on Saturday, July 18, with kick-off at 10pm UK time. The match will be broadcast live on BBC One. France lost their semi-final 2-1 to Spain in Dallas, with William Saliba withdrawn after 27 minutes.
