Arsenal advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 victory at Ipswich Town's Portman Road on Monday, with 16-year-old Max Dowman scoring twice on his first competitive start of the season.
Dowman opened the scoring inside six minutes, intercepting high up the pitch before receiving a flick from Ebere Eze and slotting past Christian Walton. Noni Madueke then doubled Arsenal's lead after Bruno Guimaraes won the ball from Walton's pass and Mikel Merino chipped through for the England winger to finish.
Dowman added a third within 90 seconds of the second half, converting after a deflected pass from Martin Zubimendi. Merino completed the scoring with a composed finish off the post to make it 4-0 before Ipswich responded.
Anis Mehmeti pulled one back in the 62nd minute after a run from substitute Jack Clarke, and former Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom netted in stoppage time, but Arsenal held on comfortably to reach the round of 16.
Dowman's brace made him the second 16-year-old to score twice in a game for a Premier League side in all competitions, behind Wayne Rooney, who achieved the feat in October 2002. At 16 years and 258 days, Dowman also became part of Arsenal's trio of the three youngest scorers in Carabao Cup history, sitting between Jack Wilshere (16 years, 266 days) and Cesc Fabregas, who remains the youngest at 16 years and 212 days.
Mikel Arteta also handed a debut to Theo Julienne, who came on as a substitute for Guimaraes and operated at right back, with Zubimendi shifting into midfield.
Arsenal's next fixture is a Premier League trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, September 19, kicking off at 3pm UK time.
