Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Hull City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with full-back Pep Chavarria pointing to defensive frailty as the key issue to address.

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early lead, but Hull responded with two goals in six minutes to turn the game around. Joao Pedro's third Premier League goal of the season earned the Blues a point, though Chavarria was clear the result was not good enough.

'I think that when we scored the first goal we controlled the game, but when they equalised Hull did good things,' said the Spanish defender. 'Our team is very competitive and we always have a lot of energy to score goals, but we need to defend better, I think that is the key.'

Chavarria highlighted the specific tactical challenge Hull posed. 'Hull want to play long balls and box-to-box. It's difficult because you stay in their area and then you need to defend in our area. They like to run and you need to defend those actions.'

The 28-year-old came off the bench at half-time to make his fourth Premier League appearance since joining Chelsea from Rayo Vallecano this summer. He acknowledged Chelsea improved after the break but insisted the draw demands a response in training.

'I think that the team did a good game, but we conceded two goals, so we need to work hard and we need to solve the problems,' he said.

Hull arrived at Stamford Bridge unbeaten in the league and had yet to concede a Premier League goal before Saturday's match. Chavarria said Chelsea's second-half intensity was encouraging, adding that he is settling in well at the club. 'For me it's a dream to be here and I'm very happy. I feel very good now and I think that the adaptation is good.'
