Rio Ngumoha has become the youngest player in Liverpool's history to register an assist in European competition, breaking a record that had stood for nearly 28 years.

The 18-year-old forward set up two goals during Liverpool's Champions League tie against Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday, which the Reds won 4-3. Ngumoha was aged 18 years and 52 days when he provided his first assist, according to Opta's Michael Reid.

His delivery from the flank allowed Ronald Araujo to make it 2-2 at the end of the first half. Ngumoha then drove forward and crossed for Alexis Mac Allister to fire in Liverpool's third goal.

The previous record had been held by Michael Owen, who assisted in European competition at the age of 18 years and 324 days against Valencia in November 1998.

Ngumoha has made five appearances for Liverpool this season, establishing himself as one of the more prominent young figures in the squad.
