Chelsea's Five Most Memorable Moments vs Sunderland

Chelsea have built a long list of memorable moments against Sunderland, with the Black Cats on the receiving end of several iconic performances and title celebrations across the Premier League era.

The clubs first met in the Premier League in 1996/97, when Chelsea recorded a 6-2 victory at Stamford Bridge. Since then, goals, performances and top-flight title celebrations have stood out, and the club has picked five of the most notable.

The first came on 7 August 1999, when Chelsea beat newly promoted Sunderland 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. Gus Poyet scored the goal of the game, scissor-kicking a volley into the top corner after Gianfranco Zola had set him up with a pass over the defence.

On 16 January 2010, Ashley Cole scored in a 7-2 win over Sunderland. Supporters voted it the Goal of the Season. John Terry's lofted pass found Cole running into space, and he beat Sunderland skipper Lorik Cana before finishing into the far corner.

Eden Hazard produced one of his finest displays at the Stadium of Light on 4 December 2013. He assisted Frank Lampard and then scored two individual goals in a 4-3 win, with the second, again created alongside Lampard, particularly memorable.

Chelsea's Premier League title triumphs have both been sealed with final-day wins over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge. The first, on 24 May 2015, ended 3-1 after a Diego Costa penalty and a Loic Remy brace, and it also saw Didier Drogba carried off by his team-mates after his final Chelsea appearance.

The second came on 21 May 2017, in a 5-1 win over the relegated Black Cats. Willian levelled after Chelsea had fallen behind, Hazard and Pedro added goals, and Michy Batshuayi scored a late double as the celebrations began.
