Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby says fans have warmed to Ronald Araujo because he clearly loves defending, a quality he believes is rare in modern football.

Speaking on LFCTV's latest Preview Show, Molby said: "It's very unusual, I think, in modern-day football when you have defenders who just love defending."

He said defenders are usually judged on their ball skills. "Because mainly we talk about their ability on the ball – 'he's a good ball player' – and you look at all the possession stats and passing stats."

Araujo, on loan from FC Barcelona, has made 14 appearances since arriving in August. This week he collected the Standard Chartered Player of the Month award for October.

Molby said the Uruguay international has already done plenty in the game because of his time at Barcelona. "But he has come here and from day one he is kind of letting people know, 'I'm a defender first and foremost, I love defending.'"

"Because of everybody else and the way they play, I think the fans have just gone, 'He just loves defending.'"
