James Maddison returned from a 536-day absence to score and earn the man-of-the-match award as Tottenham beat Coventry City 3-1 on Monday, claiming their first Premier League win of the 2026/27 season.
The midfielder, making his first competitive start since May 2025, opened the scoring on 14 minutes by whipping a shot into the top left corner from outside the box after Mohammed Kudus laid the ball into his path. It was his 21st Premier League goal from outside the penalty area since his top-flight debut in August 2018, more than any other player in that span.
Newly-promoted Coventry, who had won back-to-back league games heading into the match, levelled through Jack Rudoni four minutes into the second half. Omar Marmoush restored Spurs' lead on 59 minutes with his first goal for the club, before Ben Davies sealed the result deep into stoppage time with a strike from the edge of the box.
Maddison was substituted off in the 69th minute, replaced by Conor Gallagher, and received a standing ovation from the home crowd. Another long-term absentee, Dejan Kulusevski, also came off the bench late on, ending his own 526-day wait to play in a Spurs shirt.
The result gives Tottenham, who sit 16th in the Premier League table with six points from seven games, a first league victory of the campaign. Maddison took 70 per cent of the fan vote for player of the match on the club's official app.
