Liverpool eliminated Chelsea from the Carabao Cup on penalties at Anfield on Tuesday, winning a 16-kick shoot-out 6-5 after the match had ended 1-1 following 90 minutes.

Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead with a penalty on 40 minutes, but Cody Gakpo equalised from the spot three minutes later after Wesley Fofana handled a corner. Neither side could find a winner in the second half.

The shoot-out stretched into sudden death after Valentín Barco hit the post and Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas blazed over. Goalkeeper Mike Penders kept Chelsea alive by saving Ryan Gravenberch's effort, but debutant Emmanuel Emegha was then denied by Giorgi Mamardashvili. Joe Gomez scored Liverpool's decisive 16th penalty before Fofana fired over to end Chelsea's cup run.

Manager Xabi Alonso made four changes from the side that faced Tottenham, with Fofana, Malo Gusto — making his 100th start for the club — Romeo Lavia and Rogers all coming into the starting XI.

Penders produced several important saves during normal time, most notably turning away a deflected Florian Wirtz effort late in the second half. Chelsea's best opportunity to win it in regulation fell to substitute Marco Palestra 12 minutes from time, but Mamardashvili saved well.

Chelsea, fifth in the Premier League with 13 points from eight games, return to domestic action on Saturday with a home fixture against Manchester United.
