Jordan Henderson marked his Stamford Bridge debut with a brace as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday, with the midfielder opening the scoring inside two minutes and adding a late free-kick to complete the rout.
"It was a good day," Henderson said after the final whistle. "It was my home debut so it was a big day for me. I was delighted to play here. It's been a while since my injury in the summer, so it was nice to be here at Stamford Bridge for the first time and play."
Henderson set up Morgan Rogers for Chelsea's second goal shortly after his opener, while Joao Pedro added two more as the Blues recorded an emphatic return to winning ways following the international break. The victory gave Chelsea their earliest two-goal lead of the Premier League era.
The midfielder's free-kick, which manager Xabi Alonso described as a "beauty", came after work on set-pieces with coach Austin MacPhee at Cobham during the break. Henderson revealed Cole Palmer and Rogers were initially reluctant to cede duties.
"Cole said: 'Which corner are we celebrating in when you score?!' So I said they wanted the right, then put it in, thankfully," Henderson recounted. "It was nice because it was something that we worked on in training and we executed it really well."
Despite the attacking display from the trio of Rogers, Palmer and Joao Pedro, Henderson reserved particular praise for the team's defensive discipline. "What I was most pleased with today was the work we did and the defensive attitude without the ball," he said. "That helps the team and gives us a platform. When we win it back, they're so good on the transition."
Chelsea started both halves strongly, with Henderson highlighting the team's concentration as a key factor in the convincing scoreline.
