Haaland header sends Man City past Coventry 1-0

Erling Haaland's first-half header gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium, extending their perfect start to the Premier League season to three wins from three under Enzo Maresca.

Coventry had the earliest chance of the match when Taiwo Awoniyi broke clear on goal but struck wide of the left post. Rayan Cherki also went close for City, hitting the post after a sharp run before the half-hour mark.

The only goal arrived when Enzo Fernández released Antoine Semenyo down the right flank and the winger delivered a cross for Haaland to head home. It was the Norwegian's 20th headed goal in the top flight since joining City in the summer of 2022, the most by any player in the division in that period.

Haaland had a chance to double the lead before the break after Cherki's flick sent him through, but Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth blocked the effort.

Coventry pushed for an equaliser after the interval. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a low effort from substitute Loum Tchaouna with around 20 minutes remaining, then denied Ellis Simms from close range ten minutes later. City held firm to secure the three points.

New signings Iliman Ndiaye and Enzo Fernández both started the fixture, their second appearance for the club following back-to-back wins to open the league campaign.
