Chelsea ended Everton's unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Pedro Neto scoring twice in the second half to seal three points for the visitors.
Everton had been competitive in the first half and created the clearest opening of the opening 45 minutes when Thierno Barry headed a Jack Grealish delivery straight at Emiliano Martinez from six yards out.
A key incident arose just before the interval when Morgan Rogers, already on a yellow card, avoided a second booking after a challenge on James Garner. Had Rogers been dismissed, the second-half narrative may well have been different.
Chelsea took the lead within seconds of the restart. Rogers played Josh Acheampong down the left byline and the defender picked out Neto inside the area, who finished first-time beyond Jordan Pickford.
Everton brought on Tyrique George from the bench, with Brennan Johnson and Christian Nørgaard — making his Everton debut — also introduced, but the hosts could not test substitute goalkeeper Mike Penders, who had replaced Martinez after the Argentine was stretchered off following a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite.
Neto wrapped up the points as 11 minutes of added time approached. Jordan Henderson's 20-yard free-kick was blocked, but Neto collected the loose ball inside the area and side-footed a finish into the bottom left-hand corner to complete the scoring.
