Chelsea marked 27 October 2007 with one of the most commanding performances of the Premier League era, thrashing Manchester City 6-0 at Stamford Bridge.
City arrived in west London having won four consecutive matches. Chelsea, however, were adapting to life without José Mourinho, who had left a month earlier, with Avram Grant now in the dugout.
Michael Essien opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a precise finish. Frank Lampard then split the City defence with a through ball that freed Didier Drogba to beat Joe Hart and double the lead before half-time.
Drogba added a third early in the second half before Joe Cole made it 4-0 after being released by the Ivorian. Salomon Kalou and substitute Andriy Shevchenko both converted Essien passes to complete the rout.
City manager Sven-Göran Eriksson offered a candid assessment after the final whistle. "We forgot how to defend," he said. "If you give a team like Chelsea space and time that will happen."
By the end, six goals barely told the full story of Chelsea's superiority on the day.
