Virgil van Dijk says wearing the captain's armband at Liverpool is something he will never take for granted, heading into his fourth season as the club's permanent skipper.
The Dutch defender took up the role in 2023 following Jordan Henderson's departure and has led the side since.
"That feeling every time, no matter where we are, to lead out the boys is incredible. I would never, ever take that for granted," Van Dijk said.
"The values of the club – obviously you guys know it better than I do probably still – how important that is to have that connection. To have that understanding of the city, what the people of Liverpool are all about."
Van Dijk also spoke about the demands placed on the squad. "All those people out there and the fans around the world expect us to perform each and every three or four days regardless. And it's a nice thing, to be fair. I embrace it a lot. I really enjoy the fact of feeling that responsibility."
The No.4 stressed the importance of unity during difficult periods. "You have to make sure everyone understands what we're going for, everyone understands that when we go through difficult moments – which we go through – we have to stick together."
Van Dijk's comments came as part of a new LFC Original film titled Captains, in which he appears alongside former Liverpool skippers Steven Gerrard and Graeme Souness. The film is set for full release on All Red Video on Tuesday, August 18.
