Tottenham have agreed a deal to sell defender Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid, the club confirmed on August 15.

Romero, who joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021, made 156 appearances for the club across all competitions. The Argentine was named captain for the 2025/26 campaign and played 32 times last season.

The 27-year-old was a key figure in Tottenham's UEFA Europa League triumph in 2024/25. He becomes one of the most decorated players to leave the club in recent years.

Romero won the Copa America with Argentina shortly before arriving in north London, then became only the second Spurs player to win the World Cup when Argentina defeated France in Qatar in 2022. He won a second Copa America in 2024 and reached a second World Cup Final this summer.

Born in Cordoba, Romero began his career at Belgrano before spells at Genoa and Juventus preceded his move to Atalanta, from where Tottenham signed him.

No transfer fee was disclosed in the club announcement.
