Manchester City have won the Community Shield seven times in 16 appearances in the traditional season curtain-raiser, ahead of a new edition against Arsenal.
City's first triumph came in 1937, when the club entered the then-named Charity Shield as league champions after scoring 107 goals en route to the title. Peter Doherty and Alec Herd scored in a 2-0 win over FA Cup holders Sunderland at Maine Road, with Frank Swift, Bobby Marshall and record scorer Eric Brook among those on the pitch.
The second Shield victory arrived in 1968 with a 6-1 demolition of West Bromwich Albion — a margin that remains joint highest in the competition's 115-year history. Bobby Owen and Francis Lee each scored twice, with Neil Young and a Graham Lovett own goal completing the rout.
In 1972, Lee converted a penalty at Villa Park to beat Aston Villa 1-0 in an unusual edition where champions Derby County and FA Cup winners Leeds United both declined to participate. City had finished fourth in the league and faced the Division Three title holders.
The 2012 Shield, played at Villa Park to avoid a clash with the London Olympics, saw City beat Chelsea 3-2. Trailing to Fernando Torres, City scored three times in 12 minutes through Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri before Ryan Bertrand pulled one back.
Pep Guardiola collected his first Shield in 2018 as Sergio Aguero scored twice in a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley — his 200th goal for the club. It was also Riyad Mahrez's debut for City following his summer move from Leicester.
City retained the trophy in 2019 via a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool after a 1-1 draw. Claudio Bravo saved from Georginio Wijnaldum, with Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus all converting. Rodrigo made his debut in that game, while Leroy Sane suffered a knee injury that kept him out for much of the season.
The seventh and most recent victory came in 2024, when City defeated Manchester United 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Bernardo Silva headed an 89th-minute equaliser to cancel out Alejandro Garnacho's opener, before Jadon Sancho missed and Manuel Akanji converted the winning spot-kick after Jonny Evans had blazed over. It was Guardiola's third Community Shield as City manager.
