Trey Nyoni says he has used the summer to address weaknesses in his game and wants the work to translate into consistent first-team minutes for Liverpool in 2026-27.

The 19-year-old started all three of Liverpool's pre-season fixtures during the club's tour of the United States, using the games as an audition under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

"Obviously over the summer I knew I had a lot to improve, so I've tried to work on it over the summer and come back and give myself the best chance possible this pre-season," Nyoni said. "Obviously I still need to keep improving, keep developing each game but so far it's been all right."

Liverpool won their opening two tour matches against Sunderland and Wrexham before suffering a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United in Chicago on Sunday. The Reds led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz but conceded four times after the break.

Nyoni acknowledged the second-half collapse but pointed to the adjustment period under a new manager. "I think in the first half we played really well. I just think in the second half we lost our way a bit. But we're still learning the system, so we'll keep progressing."

The midfielder also highlighted the importance of squad cohesion with several new faces involved. "There's a few new guys and obviously a new manager as well, so I feel like the bond of being there together is the core at the end of the day. It's been a good tour."

Nyoni added that the level of supporter turnout across the United States underlined the scale of the club. "Liverpool is a massive club so it's expected, to be fair, but the fan base has been really, really good. The support that we've had, we can feel it, so we appreciate it."
