Chelsea academy midfielder Calvin Diakite has described his experience travelling with the first-team squad on their pre-season tour in Australia as "surreal", saying the trip has provided a significant step in his development.

"It's been a bit surreal, to be honest with you, travelling with the first team and coming on tour," Diakite said. "I've learned a lot from being here; it's been very good."

Diakite highlighted the influence of senior players in helping the younger members of the group settle in. "The senior players have been great and they've made us feel comfortable off the pitch, in the hotel and things like that," he said.

The academy player singled out defenders Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana as particularly important figures. "Wes is a very good person to be around; he makes us feel very comfortable. It's the same with Levi," Diakite said. "He's obviously been in my position before – a young guy that's come through the Academy – and he's been amazing with me."

The tour marks Diakite's first visit to Australia. He noted that the time difference has made contact with family and friends back home difficult, and that his focus has remained on training and recovery throughout the trip.

Several other Chelsea academy players have also travelled with the first-team squad. Diakite said the group of younger players has spent their downtime together at the hotel. "We're all good friends, and we're always together when we have downtime," he said.

Diakite expressed hope that the experience would carry into the forthcoming season. "I really hope I can take these experiences with me into the season and push on," he said. "It can only benefit me, and I'm thankful for the opportunity and experience."
