Gianluigi Donnarumma has spoken warmly of Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, describing the Italian coach as "a truly, truly special person" who has transformed the atmosphere at the club's training ground since his arrival.
Donnarumma, who was named one of City's team captains by Maresca, said the appointment has been a source of personal pride. "He has great faith in me, and he trusts me a lot," the goalkeeper said. "It's a source of pride and honour for me to represent this team, this jersey."
The 27-year-old credited Maresca's attention to detail and man-management as key factors in City's strong start to the season. "He has great enthusiasm and he manages to make each of us express ourselves at our best and that, I think, is a very, very important skill," Donnarumma added.
Donnarumma's comments came off the back of City's 1-0 victory away at Old Trafford in the 199th Manchester derby. Erling Haaland scored the only goal in the second half, with City playing over an hour with ten men following Phil Foden's dismissal.
Donnarumma produced a crucial late save to secure the clean sheet, tipping away a Bryan Mbuemo effort in the 94th minute after the United forward had been played in by Bruno Fernandes. "A decisive save in the 94th minute in a derby – even more beautiful. Even more emotional," he said.
The goalkeeper described the win as a statement of the team's character. "This is us - a team that never gives up, that has so much quality, that wants to show that we can overcome all adversity."
City now turn their attention to a Premier League home fixture against Sunderland on Sunday 20 September at the Etihad Stadium. The Black Cats, managed by Régis Le Bris, finished seventh in the Premier League in their first season back in the top flight. "It will be like all matches – a difficult match, a very complicated match, and you have to prepare well," Donnarumma said.
